How infuriating to you is the story about Jessica Barba? It's one thing to fight my own free-speech battles, but to see that 15-year-olds have to fight for First Amendment rights makes me insane.
Read this article about a Longwood High School student who aced a class project on persuasive speech, using social media like Facebook and YouTube to create a fictitious character that gets bullied and later commits suicide. Barba's goal was to bring attention to the serious impacts of bullying, and she did. What she didn't realize was the bully would be her principal.
The school's principal had a problem with the fact that one parent called the police when they learned of what they thought was an actual suicide. Instead of clarifying matters with the parent and police, the principal decided to suspend the girl for 5 days and warn her that her actions could land her in jail.
Nice going, school administrators! You are in our children's lives to teach them how to read and write, in the hopes they use those skills to make our world a better place. Instead, you tell them to shut their mouths and intimidate them with threats of imprisonment. The bully, is YOU!
